Overview
- Gross wages and federal, Social Security and Medicare taxable wages may differ. A traditional retirement contribution can explain that difference.
- Copy W-4 Step 3 annual credits and Step 4 annual adjustments into advanced options. Additional withholding is entered per paycheck.
- For a particular high-income paycheck, enter this employer’s Social Security and Medicare wages already paid this year. The default estimate averages annual FICA.
Example
Reconciling a pay stub
For a biweekly employee, start with annual salary divided by 26 and deductions for that check. If withholding differs, compare taxable wages and W-4 settings before changing salary.
Assumptions
- 2020-or-later W-4; employee wages, not self-employment.
- Current Utah schedules effective June 1, 2026; annualized allowance method.
- No optional deductions or adjustments unless entered; default FICA is an annual average.
