Overview
- Commission paid through payroll is included with employee wages in this estimate. The default combines it with regular salary for the selected period.
- A larger commission check can produce higher aggregate income-tax withholding because payroll annualizes that period’s taxable wages.
- Commission timing, draws, chargebacks and employer methods vary. Enter the amount actually paid on the check and verify its payroll treatment.
Example
A $2,500 commission payment
The default adds $2,500 of commission to a $65,000 salary paycheck. Adjust the amount and schedule to match the commission statement.
Commission withholding versus final tax
Withholding on one commission check is not a separate final tax calculation. Full-year wages, household income, deductions, credits and total payments determine the return.
Extra withholding entered on Form W-4 continues to apply for each paycheck.
Compare the result with payroll records
Match base wages, commission, pay frequency, W-4 choices, benefit deductions and year-to-date wages. A draw or recovery may require entries beyond a simple commission amount.
Use the detailed result to identify which line differs rather than comparing only the final deposit.
Assumptions
- 2020-or-later W-4; employee wages, not self-employment.
- Current Utah schedules effective June 1, 2026; annualized allowance method.
- No optional deductions or adjustments unless entered; default FICA is an annual average.
