Overview
- Current Utah withholding applies 4.45% to income-tax wages and subtracts the remaining allowance. It is not simply 4.45% of every employee’s gross pay.
- The annual single allowance starts at $485 and phases out at 1.3% of wages over $9,348. Married withholding uses $970 and $18,696; head of household uses single.
- Traditional retirement deferrals and qualifying pre-tax payroll benefits reduce Utah taxable wages. Federal W-4 credits do not directly reduce Utah withholding.
Example
The withholding allowance at lower wages
At $20,000 annual taxable wages and single withholding, the remaining allowance is $346.52. Annualized Utah withholding is $543.48 before per-paycheck rounding.
