Overview
- The calculator multiplies overtime hours by the base hourly rate and entered overtime multiplier, then adds regular wages once.
- Overtime wages generally enter the same federal, Utah and FICA tax bases as other employee wages. Withholding can rise because the paycheck is larger.
- Actual overtime entitlement and the applicable multiplier depend on employment facts and wage law; use the rate shown by the employer.
Example
Five overtime hours at $30 per hour
At a 1.5 multiplier, five overtime hours add $225 to $1,200 of regular weekly wages, producing $1,425 gross before taxes and deductions.
How overtime changes withholding
Payroll annualizes the larger period wage when applying income-tax withholding. This can make one overtime check show a higher withholding percentage without making every annual dollar subject to that rate.
Social Security and Medicare apply to eligible overtime wages under their normal wage-base and threshold rules.
Avoid double counting hours
Enter ordinary hours in regular hours and only premium hours in overtime hours. The calculator already multiplies the overtime hours by the selected factor.
For biweekly payroll, enter the hours from both weeks and choose biweekly frequency.
Assumptions
- 2020-or-later W-4; employee wages, not self-employment.
- Current Utah schedules effective June 1, 2026; annualized allowance method.
- No optional deductions or adjustments unless entered; default FICA is an annual average.

Is overtime taxed at a special Utah rate?
The calculator treats overtime as taxable employee wages. A larger check can have more withholding, but the wages are not assigned a separate Utah overtime tax.
Does this calculator decide whether I qualify for overtime?
