There is no universal percentage taken from every Utah paycheck. Your employer calculates federal income-tax withholding, Utah withholding, Social Security and Medicare separately. Benefit contributions and other deductions can further reduce the deposit without being taxes.

Start with taxable wages

Gross pay is the amount earned before deductions. Income-tax wages can be lower after traditional retirement deferrals or qualifying payroll benefits. FICA wages can be different again: a traditional 401(k) contribution normally remains subject to Social Security and Medicare, while qualifying Section 125 benefits can be excluded. See IRS Publication 15 for employment-tax treatment.

Federal withholding follows your W-4

The payroll calculation uses your filing status and W-4 entries. Annual credits reduce tentative tax; they are not deductions from wages. Extra withholding is added to each paycheck. The IRS percentage method applies progressive bands, so the highest band reached is not the rate paid on every dollar.

Utah withholding includes an allowance

Current Utah Publication 14 schedules apply a 4.45% rate and a withholding allowance that phases out as wages increase. They apply to pay periods beginning June 1, 2026 or later. The calculator uses the annualized allowance method explained in its methodology.

Assumptions: single Utah resident employee, one job, 2020-or-later W-4 with Steps 2–4 blank, 26 equal paychecks, no benefit deductions or additional withholding. Current Utah schedules are projected across the year. Each paycheck tax is rounded to cents; annual/monthly equivalents repeat that check and can differ from final tax-return liability or an employer's rounding.

Use the assumptions beneath the table when comparing this example with your own check. A spouse’s earnings, different W-4 credits or benefit deductions can change the result. A refund or balance due is determined when filing a tax return, rather than by this paycheck projection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one tax percentage for every Utah paycheck?

No. Federal withholding, Utah withholding and FICA use separate rules. W-4 elections and taxable benefits also affect the result.

Is a retirement deduction a tax?

No. Retirement contributions are savings deducted from pay. Traditional deferrals can reduce income-tax withholding while remaining subject to FICA.
