This guide covers the employee side of a Utah paycheck. It helps explain deductions on a pay stub; it is not an employer filing calendar or a complete tax-compliance guide.
Federal income-tax withholding
Employers use W-4 information to calculate withholding. The 2026 IRS percentage method includes filing status, the multiple-jobs checkbox, annual credits, other-income and deduction adjustments, and extra withholding per check. A blank W-4 adjustment field is not the same as a withholding exemption.
The calculator supports the 2020-or-later W-4 method. Copy your actual annual credit amount into Step 3. Do not subtract that credit from gross salary or enter it again as a payroll deduction.
Utah income-tax withholding
Publication 14 uses a rate and allowance formula. The June 2026 schedules use 4.45%; the allowance reduces withholding at lower wages and phases out as wages rise. Head of household uses single withholding. No W-4 means no Utah withholding allowance.
Our Utah income-tax calculator uses an annualized version of the formula. Exact period schedules round constants differently, so small employer differences can remain.
Social Security and Medicare
IRS employee FICA guidance specifies 6.2% Social Security up to the 2026 $184,500 wage base, plus 1.45% Medicare. An employer begins additional 0.9% Medicare withholding on wages over $200,000, regardless of filing status. That employer threshold is different from determining final tax-return liability.
Benefits and paycheck verification
Check income-tax wages separately from FICA wages. Traditional retirement contributions and qualifying Section 125 benefits do not receive identical treatment. Post-tax items such as Roth contributions do not reduce the taxable base in this model.
Use the detailed paycheck worksheet with the same pay period and W-4 as the stub. For a particular high-income check, enter wages already paid by that employer. Read the methodology and limits for supplemental payments, rounding and annual projections, or calculate a new estimate.
